What is Beomseom?

Korea Natural Monument No. 421

Beomseom island, Natural Monument No. 421

The crouching-tiger island,
where the flowers of the sea bloom

Beomseom is an uninhabited island off Beophwan, Seogwipo. From afar it resembles a crouching tiger, hence its name (虎島, Tiger Island). Designated part of the Munseom·Beomseom Nature Reserve (Natural Monument No. 421) in 2000, these waters host an internationally rare soft-coral community where most of Korea's coral species gather.

Nature Reserve

The Munseom·Beomseom Nature Reserve, designated in 2000: a protected sea cradled by uninhabited islands off Seogwipo.

Soft Coral Gardens

Soft corals, called 'flowers of the sea' for their resemblance to garden cockscombs, paint the vertical walls in pink, orange, and yellow.

Beomseom Dive Points

Rocks eroded into 'nostril' shapes, sheer drop-off walls, and the coral-rich Flower Garden: Beomseom's own dive points where schools of silver damselfish swirl around you.

“Back on the boat, the thing guests say most often is: ‘Is this really Korea?’” Bae Kyung-jo, RAID Master Instructor · SSI Advanced Instructor

Beomseom's waters are where nature-documentary crews come to film.

Location

In Gangjeong-dong, Seogwipo, right on the water facing Beomseom.

Before you dive

A few things to check for a safe, comfortable dive.

Reserve rules

Beomseom is a protected reserve. You may not touch or collect protected species such as soft corals and black corals, and landing on the island is restricted. Take it in with your eyes; leave no trace.

Safety

Every dive is a guided boat dive with an instructor. Seogwipo's waters are patrolled by the coast guard, and recompression (hyperbaric) care is available nearby.

Eligibility

Discover diving is open to anyone aged 10+ with no certification. Even non-swimmers dive, because your instructor stays one-on-one from entry.

FAQ

Frequently asked about Beomseom

The questions we hear most before a Beomseom dive.

Can I dive at Beomseom if I can't swim?

Yes. An instructor stays with you one-on-one from entry to ascent and your BCD keeps you supported. Many of our guests are non-swimmers.

Why swimming and diving are different skills: the full answer

Can I see the soft corals by skin diving?

Yes. From the surface you can see the corals along the shallow edges. To meet the full wall, we recommend a discover dive.

What's the refund policy if I cancel or reschedule?

Full refund up to 3 days before; 50% is deducted 2 days before; from 1 day before through the day itself, refunds aren't available. However, if weather that affects safety (typhoons, high waves, strong winds) makes diving impossible, we cancel with a 100% refund or reschedule. See the terms of service for details.

How many sessions run per day? Can I join alone?

Discover dives run three times a day (08:30 · 11:30 · 15:00) in small groups. Plenty of guests join on their own, so feel free to ask.

How long does the experience take?

The full program runs about 2.5 to 3 hours, with about 20 minutes underwater from entry to exit. Times can vary with weather and conditions on the day.

Are there health conditions that limit participation?

Yes. For safety, participation may be limited in cases such as cardiovascular or respiratory conditions, pregnancy, alcohol consumption, or certain medications. Tell us honestly about your health when booking and we'll confirm whether you can join. Full criteria are in the terms of service.

When and where do I need to be on the day?

Just arrive at our office by the time we confirm with your booking. No early assembly needed. See the directions section for the location.

Are there showers and towels?

Yes. Showers plus towels, hair dryers, shampoo, conditioner and body wash are all provided. Come as you are and leave refreshed.

Can I fly after diving?

We advise boarding a flight at least 12 hours after your discover dive. If you're flying the same day or early the next morning, check the timing with us when you book.

Can minors join?

Yes. Minors aged 10 and up can join with a guardian's consent.
